B715 - SOLDThis beautiful antique French carved mahogany pediment would originally have come from an armoire or mirror and dates from the 1800's. It is a fabulously decorative architectural piece and would look stunning over a doorway or as a centre piece on a curtain pelmet. Fixed above a bed it could form part of a ciel de lit from which to drape curtains. The crest of the pediment is formed by the carved head of a figure wearing a tricorn plumed hat. The figure has very striking facial features and is very 3 dimensional. There is a swagged and draped cravat to the neck. To either side of the head a cornucopia filled with fruit sweeps and curls outwards. The plinth upon which the pediment sits is also carved and has curled acanthus leaf decoration to the shoulders. There are two pegs beneath the plinth but these could easily be cut off if they were not required in a project. The pediment is in excellent condition. We have left it as we found it but it could be waxed and polished if required. There is just one worm hole to the front which has been treated. It measures 59 cm (23 inches) wide x 27 cm (10.75 inches) high x 2.5 cm (1 inch) deep at the bottom and 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) deep at the face of the figure. This is a substantial and decorative piece to add authentic château chic glamour and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe.
