This is an exquisite antique French hand made silk cushion dating around 1920. It is large and plumptious and is one of the most gorgeous things I have ever seen!

The top of the cushion is made in silk  dupion in a gorgeous shade of deep chocolate and it is here that the visual extravaganza takes place. Just off centre is hand painted the most exquisite lady . She has the fashionable maquillage of the era and her hair is dark and glossy. She wears an exquisite crinoline skirted ball gown in a gorgeous shade of deep pink. It has a deep plunging back and is  swagged with roses at the bottom. Just above the elbow is a frothy white cuff.

The lady has her arm outstretched to a plethora of embroidered flowers that tumble out of an embroidered yellow urn. The flowers are beautifully worked in a profusion of vibrant colours. They fall down her back and down the side on the cushion. In the background is a palladian folly worked in red, white and blue stitching with a halo of blue clouds above. Further flowers complete the frame of this sublime scene.

The cushion is oval in shape and has softly pleated sides in a pink and ochre brocade. It is is not overly filled and this adds to it's sumptuous nature.

The back of the cushion is made in a fine cotton in a tea colour.

The cushion has survived the years is in excellent condition. The top panel of the cushion has just one tiny pull in the silk among the clouds. The pink brocade of the sides is a little faded in places as one would expect. There is just a little wear to this where it joins the top panel on the right hand side of the lady's skirt (see pic). This does not detract and there is plenty of textile to catch it up if required.

The cushion is approx. 61 cm (24 inches) wide x 52 cm (20.5 inches) deep x 17 cm (6.75 inches) high.

Just think how fantastic this cushion would look on a daybed draped with piano shawls! It would certainly add a château chic finishing touch and is another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
