B736 - Superb Antique French Tapestry Chocolate Box, Romantic 18th C Scene, Early 1900's
This is a superb antique French tapestry box dating from the early 1900's. It would originally have held chocolates but would now be perfect for a few precious letters or photos.
The lid of the box is covered in a gorgeous tapestry depicting a romantic 18th Century scene. The scene is set in an orchard where a rather dashing gentleman is up a ladder picking apples. His young lady looks up at him adoringly as she holds out her apron ready to catch the apples.
The setting is idyllic with lovely trees and a stream in the background. There are flowers in the foreground and two gorgeous white geese.
The colours are sublime. Soft muted greens and ochres dominate the palette against which the raspberry pink of the costumes contrasts perfectly.
The box has a wonderful timeworn quality but is in actual fact sturdy. Years of use has caused a little pulling of the hinge of the lid but it is still firmly attached to the box.
It measures :- 24 cm (9.5 inches) wide x 24 cm (9.5 inches) deep x 5 cm (2 inches) high.
A gorgeous tapestry box to display or use and enjoy and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
