This is a charming antique French trinket box dating from about 1900. It has a working key and would be perfect for securing a few special keepsakes.
The box is made of pewter in the Art Nouveau style. On the lid is a gorgeous design worked in fabulous detail. There is a central bow from which hangs a beautiful basket of flowers. To either side further flower garlands swag and fall as if caught at the corners. Under the basket the piece is signed 'P. Chaumette'.
The sides of the box have further Art Nouveau decoration. There is a little lock and key that work perfectly.
The lid has a sturdy piano hinge and lifts up to reveal an interior lined with a deep blue plush. The bottom of the box bears a Paris stamp. The pewter has mellowed to an atmospheric dark grey hue.
The box measures :- 16 cm (6.25 inches) wide x 10 cm (4 inches) deep x 4.5 cm (1.75 inches) high.
