B749 - SOLDThis is a sublime Antique French velvet portiere dating from the 1800's. It is of superb quality and would have come from a château. It oozes faded timeworn grandeur and would certainly add an authentic château chic finishing touch. The portiere is a gorgeous shade of red with the merest hint of coral and it has the most divine printed border. The border has a background in a fabulous shade of old gold. The design incorporates all the most gorgeous things one could hope to find. There are acanthus leaf swirls and curls, rose garlands, rose filled urns and horns and little blue bows all flowing freely in a continuous visual extravaganza. The colours are beautiful shades of faded greens, blues, pinks and golds against which the red of the roses looks superb. To the bottom of the portiere in the centre of the red panel is a beautiful flower garland ring tied with a blue bow with ribbon tails. This is flanked to either side with acanthus leaf swirls intertwined with ivy. Breathtaking! The portiere is in good antique condition. There is obviously a little fading which in our opinion actually enhances the beauty of the piece. At the top is a sewn chanel to take a pole. The sides are sewn into the lining which is clean. The velvet on the bottom has been cut at some stage during it's life. This is only on the plain velvet and does not affect the border. The perfectionist could rectify this by attaching a piece of passementerie. The portiere measures :- 250 cm (8 ft 2 inches) long x 120 cm (3 ft 11 inches) wide. A spectacular antique French portiere to use and enjoy and another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe!
