B792 - SOLD

This is a sublime antique French trinket / keepsake box dating from the Napoleon III era C1860. It's decoration suggests a romantic theme and it may originally have held love letters.

The box is lacquered in a glorious shade of old gold. On the lid is a divine vignette of an 18th Century romantic couple. They are beautifully dressed in costume in gorgeous shades of pink and turquoise and are being chased by an adorable cherub. The vignette is framed with a gorgeous gilded swirling acanthus leaf border.

The sides and corners of the box are also decorated with fabulous gilded scrollwork interspersed with tiny flowers.

On the front of the box is a tiny escutcheon. There is also a tiny key and lock which work perfectly.

The lid lifts up on a smooth piano hinge to reveal a clean brown lacquered interior speckled with gilding.

The box is in good sturdy condition. It has distressed and worn a little over the years but this just adds character to this gorgeous old piece.

It measures :- W 19 cm (7.5 inches) x D 13.5 cm (5.3 inches) x H 7 cm (2.75 inches).

A gorgeous box for those special keepsakes and another divine antique French brocante find from la Belle Étoffe!
