This is an exquisite antique French ormolu casket of exceptional quality dating from the 1800's. It would be perfect for displaying trinkets and would add a château chic touch to a boudoir.
It has a glass lid with a central gilded filigree appliqué. In the centre of the appliqué is a silvered medallion with the head and shoulders of a belle mademoiselle wearing a fabulous hat. There is also the word 'ETE'. The glass of the lid is very thick and has a bevelled edge.
The sides of the trinket casket have a decorative raised frieze with a gorgeous shell and acanthus leaf design.
The lid lifts up to to reveal a silk lined interior. The bottom is padded and buttoned with tiny silk buttons. The silk has worn over the years but this does not seem to detract from this exquisite piece. The underside of the lid shows that the filigree appliqué is actually attached by a fitting through the glass!
The casket stands on 4 delightful acorn shaped feet. The underside of the box has a beautiful silk design to the metal.
The casket has a sturdy piano hinge and a strong catch that holds the lid down very firmly.
The ormolu has mellowed over the years to a rich old gold hue.
The trinket casket measures :- 16.5 cm (6.5 inches) wide x 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) deep x 7 cm (2.75 inches) high.
A sublime trinket casket to use and enjoy and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
