This is an amazing antique French château pelmet dating from the 19th C. It would be fabulous incorporated in to a number of interior projects - perhaps as a frame for a door or a ciel de lit above a bed.
It is made of wool in a gorgeous shade of olive green. The design is that of two magnificent griffins sitting back to back and connected with stunning scrollwork. The design is painted on to the wool in gold paint, outlined with gorgeous embroidery and highlighted with silk appliqué. The green and gold colour combination is stunning.
The griffins are worked in wonderful detail. They have magnificent heads and clawed feet and their impressive long tails curl behind them. The embroidery detail perfectly emulates the impression of feathers. The sheen of the silk appliqué works marvellously to further emphasise the fabulous contours of the griffins.
At the back feet of the griffins the gold paint and the gold silk is tinted with a fabulous aubergine coloured dye. This effect can also be seen in the upper and lower embellishment at the centre of the pelmet. The effect is subtle but stunning.
The pelmet is over 100 years old but it's general condition is good. There are some small nibbles to the wool on the edges of the pelmet but they are minor and could be trimmed off during a re-modelling project. In the main design area of the pelmet there are one or two tiny areas of wear but these do not draw the eye.
The pelmet is lined. The lining is intact but there is a water mark and age spots as one would expect.
The pelmet measures :- W 214 cm (7 ft ) x H 58 cm (1 ft 10.75 inches)
A spectacular pelmet to add a château chic finishing touch and another superb antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe.
