This is an exquisite antique French château pelmet dating from the 19th C. It probably came from a bed and believe it or not we have two others (see our other items). We are selling them seperately but they could be re-united around a bed or used seperately perhaps to dress a window or to make a ciel de lit above a bed, or indeed a bed head.
This pelmet is made of the most delectable silk velvet. It is very tactile as the silk content of the textile can be felt and it is very difficult to resist stroking it. The velvet has faded to the most amazing shade of antique aubergine which is a colour that surely could not be replicated in a modern fabric. On our computer screens this colour is well represented in the photographs.
In the centre of the pelmet is a silk panel in a dark champagne colour. This is exquisitely hand embroidered with flowers and leaves in a smooth satin stitch. The work is beautifully executed and the golds and pinks perfectly compliment the aubergine velvet.
The bottom of the pelmet is scalloped and has a passementerie trim. This once had bobbles but they are now long gone but not really missed.
The pelmet is fully usable as it is. Of course it bears some blemishes from the past 100 years are so but these melt in to the beauty of the piece. There are a few small holes in the velvet at the top of the pelmet where it was attached to a frame. The silk in the embroidered panel has a few minor areas of wear (see pics) but again these blend in to the piece.
The pelmet is lined and the lining textile is again as one would expect - in antique condition but pleasingly wholesome.
The pelmet measures :- W 234 cm (7 ft 8 inches) x H 59 cm (1 ft 11.25 inches)
A truly exquisite pelmet to add an authentic château chic finishing touch and another superb antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe.
