This is a spectacular pair of antique French château curtains & matching pelmet dating from about 1900. They are in amazing condition and would certainly add a touch of château grandeur to a room.
The textile is a heavy plush velvet in a gorgeous primrose and daffodil design with an Art Nouveau / Arts & Crafts influence. The curtains positively glow with the sumptuousness of the fabric and it would help to look at the detail photographs to appreciate this. The background is a deep true shade of burgundy and the flowers are in shades of gold, cream and olive green which make a stunning contrast with the dark background.
The curtains are very heavy and thick, and, as well as looking superb, would be perfect for keeping the draughts out. They are very full and drape superbly.
The meeting edges of the curtains are trimmed with a gorgeous tassel passementerie trim that is so crisp and fresh that it looks like it has never been touched.
The curtains would originally have hung from rings sewn directly on to the top of the curtain. These had already been removed when we found the curtains but could easily be replaced (see our other items) or a piece of modern header tape could be used.
The matching pelmet is lined and has pinch pleats at the top. It has hooks for hanging on a pelmet rail. It too is trimmed with the gorgeous passementerie.
The curtains and pelmet are over 100 years old and are in amazing condition with no obvious flaws or marks, just a little darkening in places which blends in and does not draw the eye.
Each curtain measures :- 265 cm (8 ft 8.25 inches) long x 191 cm (6 ft 3 inches) wide.
The curtains and the pelmet together weigh 8.5 kg hence the postage cost.
An amazing curtain ensemble to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a room and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
