This is a gorgeous antique decorative glazed tile signed by J.Gilbert (Sir John) and dated 1880. It is beautifully painted and has a luminescent quality.

It depicts an enchanting moonlit woodland scene with a pair of lovers, who we believe to be Romeo & Juliet, on a swing. It is painted in gorgeous shades of blue to emulate the darkness of the night and the lovers are highlighted with yellow to give the effect of the moon- light softly touching their bodies.

The vegetation is painted in wonderful detail. In the foreground are lilies and iris above which a charming little dragonfly hovers.

The young couple are very beautiful. He wears a short tunic which shows his virile young limbs working the swing. His sweetheart embraces him and smiles shyly up in to his face. Her filmy gown has an ethereal quality and billows around her as she swings.

The tile measures :- H 27.5 cm (10.75 inches) x W 17 cm (6.75 inches) x D 1.5 cm (0.75 inches).
