This is an exquisite superb quality antique Italian tooled leather jewel box dating from the early 1900's. It comes complete with it's key which works perfectly. The imagery on the box suggests that it was made to be given as a love token

The exterior of the box is breathtaking. The lid has a 2 tone repoussé plate. In the centre of the plate is an oval in which 4 adorable cherubs frollick amongst the clouds playing their musical instruments. In each of the corners of the lid is a beautiful bow from which the ribbon tails entwine around a border. Within this border flower and leaf garlands surround the central oval.

Around the edge of the lid and on all 4 sides of the box the leather is tooled with gilding. In the centre of the front of the box is a beautiful basket of flowers. To either side is an oval within which are 2 crossed arrows held together with a bow. There was probably once an escutcheon plate but that has now gone.

The lid lifts up and the front of the box folds down to reveal 2 compartments. These then pull out to reveal a further 3 compartments below. The underside of the lid is lined with a stunning green moiré silk and is stamped with the name of the retail outlet from which it was sold 'ARMELIN, 62, Rue Des Postes, Angouleme' France. The top two comparments and the drop down front are also lined with the silk and the bottom 3 compartments are lined with a sumptuous green velvet.

Everything about the box is of superb quality. The leather is smooth, the piano hinges work beautifully and the textiles are to die for.

The box is in excellent condition. There is some minor scuffing to the leather in places and a little wear to the silk on the front drop down flap but this does not detract from it's beauty.

The box measures :- 19 cm (7.5 inches) wide x 15 cm (6 inches) deep x 10 cm (4 inches) high.
