B897 - SOLDThis is a beautiful antique French gilded mount dating from the 19th Century. It is very architectural and would look superb on a wall or would be perfect as a central point from which to hang drapes, perhaps over a bed as a ciel de lit.
It is beautifully carved from wood with fabulous flowers and leaves and is a very 3 dimensional piece.
Over the years the gilding has gently distressed to show the gesso beneath. This is a fabulous effect that could not be replicated and adds further charm to this gorgeous old piece.
The mount could be displayed in 3 ways :-
It could be hung with the flat side against the wall and the flowers curved upwards as a crest or ...
It could be hung with the flat side against the wall and the flowers curved downwards as a swag or ....
It could be hung with the pointed edges against the wall and the flat side pointing upwards as a ciel de lit.
The mount measures :- 42 cm (16.5 inches) wide from point to point. When hanging flat against a wall it would be 15 cm (6 inches) high to the top of the crest. When hanging on a wall as a ciel de lit the top of the pediment extends forward by 15 cm (6 inches) and it would be approx. 8 cm (3.25 inches) high.
