This is an asolutely divine antique French tapestry château curtain / portière / panel dating from the 1800's. It is a feast for the eyes and would add an authentic touch of grandeur to a room.
The tapestry is tightly woven in linen and wool and is of exceptional quality with good weight. It is woven in one piece but the design makes it look like it is made in panels. The design is absolutely fabulous and has just about everything one would hope to find! There are panels of sublime rural 18th Century scenes of people at work and play. These are very detailed with many vignettes to study - see the little flying cherub.
The rural scenes are depicted in subtle blues and greys and alternate with panels of very intricately worked floral baskets hung with ribbons and bows. The colours here are stronger shades of pinks, blues and greens and the contrast is breathtaking.
The portière is hemmed along the top and the two sides but the bottom has a raw edge ready to be hemmed to the required length. It could have rings sewn to the top to hang as a curtain or it could just be hung on a wall as a decorative piece.
It is in good antique condition. It has a little fading to the edges and one of the panels of the rural scenes, and a little wear to the right hand edge. This is just as one would expect and is just part of the character of this gorgeous antique textile.
The portière measures :- 320 cm (10 ft 6 inches) long x 115 cm (3 ft 9 inches) wide.
This is a fabulous portière / curtain / wall hanging to add an authentic château chic statement and another divine period French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
