This is an exquisite antique French icon dating from the 1800's. It is made from brass and porcelain and is of superb quality. It is very decorative and architectural.

The frame of the icon is made of brass and has been pierced in a design that resembles church architecture. There is a central spire with a cross and to either side a pillar, each of which extends down to form a foot. Tendrils of flowers and leaves entwine around the architecture and the effect is stunning.

At the centre of the frame is a porcelain oval with the image of  Mary and Jesus beautifully depicted in glorious colour and detail. Mary clasps her child to her. She is dressed in a green shawl and has a grey plaid mantle. Her robe has rich red sleeves and a dark blue skirt against which the rosy cheeked, chubby Holy Child snuggles.

The icon stands on a brass back rest and there is a loop to take a ribbon or cord to hang on a wall.

It measures :- 28 cm (11 inches) high x 14.5 cm (5.75 inches) wide when flat.

This is a fabulous religious piece to display and use and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
