B946 - SOLDThis is a divine antique French ciel de lit / bed couronne or bed canopy dating from the late 1800's, early 1900's. It would have been hung above a bed to create a decorative centre piece from which to hang drapes. It has a decorative tubular, almost circular brass frame. In the centre of the front of the frame is a fabulous acanthus leaf crest. To either side of the crest is another acanthus leaf embellishment. The crest and embellishments are cast in lovely detail and the brass has taken on a lovely subtle antique hue. Within the decorative tubular frame is a wooden frame and it is to this that the drapes would be attached. Most of the wooden frame is covered in a thick cream cotton textile. The textile is pleated across the frame to form the canopy. The textile is in good antique condition with just one watermark (see photos). There are 3 metal loops on the wooden frame. Two at the back to fix it to a wall and one on the front from which the ciel de lit can be supported by a chain. The ciel de lit is sturdy. It measures :- W 60 cm (23.5 inches) x D 54 cm (21 inches) x H 11.5 cm (4.5 inches). This is a divine bed canopy to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a boudoir and another fabulous antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
