This is a fantastic antique French vanity mirror dating from the 19th Century. It would have been purchased as an extravagant souvenir of a trip to the chic resort of Biarritz in South West France. It is absolutely gorgeous and would now make a stunning accessory in a château chic boudoir.
The mirror is bevelled and sits on an amazing metal stand fashioned to resemble intricately twisting branches of coral. This supports the most beautiful Mother of Pearl shell which makes the perfect bowl for trinkets and jewellery. The edge of the shell is engraved with 'Souvenir De Biarritz'.
A further branch of 'coral' adorns the crest of the mirror and from this, delicately carved Mother of Pearl ivy leaves cascade down one side. Beautiful!
Considering it's delicacy, the mirror and it's stand have survived the years in good condition. The gilding on the metal has mellowed to a dramatic dark hue which contrasts perfectly with the irridescent cream of the shell. There is one small chip to the ivy leaf second from the bottom but this does not detract from the beauty of this gorgeous piece.
The mirror and it's stand measures :- 25.5 cm (10 inches) high x 19.5 cm (7.75 inches) wide x 14 cm (5.5 inches) deep.
A stunning vanity mirror to use and enjoy and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe.
N.B. The jewellery and watch are for display purposes and are not included.
