This is a divine length of antique French silk serpentine passementerie trim that dates from the 1880's. It would be perfect for trimming period textiles and would compliment the most opulent of velvets, brocades and silks.

The passementerie is in a delicious shade of raspberry and has gently mellowed over the years to perfection while still maintaining it's château grandeur.

It is all in good condition and strong. It has been used so there are one or two kinks in it but these will straighten out when sewn.

This piece measures 307 cm (10 ft 1 inches) long x 3.25 cm (1.25 inches) wide.

We have another piece of this, and we also have a length of fringing and a piece of edging passementerie  that came from the same batch of textile and they are all listed in our other items.

A divine piece of antique passementerie to add a gorgeous château chic touch to a period textile project.

It can be seen in our shop in Frome, Somerset.

This is a superb pair of antique French ticking curtains dating from about 1920.

As curtains they would add a striking finishing touch to a vintage interior or they would provide masses of textile for projects. The tight cotton weave of the textile is very strong and the ticking would be perfect for upholstery.

The curtains are unlined but the ticking has good weight and they drape beautifully. The unusual red and turquoise colour combination of the stripes cuts a dash and works perfectly.

The top and bottom of each curtain is hemmed and the sides are the selvedge of the ticking. There is a little fading from the sun at the meeting edges of the curtains.

The curtains are in good vintage condition and in our opinion are ready for use. The textile feels clean and fresh but there are some faint storage marks which should lift with a quick launder. There is just one small hole towards the top of the right hand curtain.

Each curtain measures :- 268 cm (8 feet 9 inches) long x 137 cm (4 feet 6 inches) wide.

This is a fabulous pair of antique French curtains to add an authentic vintage touch to either a period or contemporary interior.

Another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.

Please note that the curtain rings & tie backs are not included with the curtains.

This is an exquisite antique French hand made silk cushion in the shape of a fan and dating around 1920. It is one of the most gorgeous things I have ever seen!

The front of the cushion is made in silk in a divine shade of deep pink now slightly faded with the passage of time. The silk is gently gathered around the edge of the cushion giving it a soft and sumptuous look.

Over the silk is a cut out fan shape appliqué in a biscuit coloured linen. The linen is finely cut to reflect the shape of the fan and has a glorious crescent of flowers and leaves. The cut out is meticulously edged with neat blanket stitch in pink and black and the details of the flowers are worked in pink satin stitch. The appliqué is attached to the cushion in a way which allows it movement thus adding to the sumptuous and unstructured nature of the cushion.

At the base of the appliqué  hangs a gorgeous silk tassel to complete the fan ensemble. The tassel is full and plumtious and is exceptionally tactile.

The back of the cushion is made in a fine cotton in the same colour as the silk.

The cushion is not overly filled and this allows it to be draped over the back of a chair.

The cushion is in excellent condition. There is a little fading to the silk which only adds to it's character and there is just one tiny tear to one of the centre straps of the appliqué fan (see pic).

The cushion measures :- 66 cm (26 inches) wide x 62 cm (24.5 inches) high including the tassel x 7.5 cm (3 inches) deep. The tassel is 14 cm long.

This is a gorgeous cushion to add a château chic finishing touch and another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.

This a superb large antique French religious wall hanging dating from the 1800's.

It would have hung in a church or a château and would now make an absolutely stunning statement piece.

The subject is the Holy Family and the piece is entitled 'La Sainte Famille D'Apres Raphaël'. It is hand painted in oil on canvas and is signed by J.H. Louis.

As the title suggests it is a copy of the original 'La Sainte Famille' painted by Raphaël in 1518 now hanging in the Louvre, Paris.

The artist has certainly managed to emulate the bold style and colours of Raphaël to create a very atmospheric piece.

At the centre of the composition is Mary wearing a stunning deep pink gown and jade green cloak. She holds out her arms to her chubby infant with his gorgeous golden curly hair. Above them an angel with fabulous purple wings holds a crown of flowers in deep pastel tones.

To the left of Jesus is Elizabeth, tightly holding the small John The Baptist who in turn clutches his crossed reed. In the background is a pensive Joseph and between him and the winged angel is another figure with crossed hands which is believed to be another angel.

Around this composition our artist Monsieur Louis, has painted a fabulous border in gorgeous shades of brown and gold to emulate a gilded picture frame. The canvas of the painting is unglazed and hangs from a wooden dowel as a wall hanging. It will roll up on to the dowel for transportation.

It is in good condition with just one tiny hole at the bottom edge and just one stain to the border in the bottom left hand corner neither of which detract.

The wall hanging measures :- 196 cm (6 ft 5 inches) high x 142 cm (4 ft 8 inches) wide.

A fabulous 19th Century copy of a 16th Century masterpiece and a very atmospheric piece to add an authentic château chic statement to an interior.

This is a sublime antique French religious banner dating from the 1800's. It would have been carried during religious processions and would now make a superbly decorative interior's piece.

All of the materials used to make the banner are of the highest quality. The front of the banner is made in a superb silk moiré taffeta in a gorgeous shade of oyster. Upon this is hand painted in fantastic detail an exquisite spray of roses. The painting of every petal and sepal is executed perfectly and the colours are gorgeous. The roses and buds are in soft shades of yellow, pink and peach, the leaves in fresh shades of green.

The roses frame the central Christogram JHS which is also beautifully painted in an old gold paint.

The sides of the banner are trimmed with a delicate gold passementerie and the scalloped base with a fringed passementerie in a soft old gold.

The back of the banner is lined with a fabulous fine silk in a shimmering shade of oyster.

The banner hangs from a pole which would originally have been held aloft on a staff during the procession. On either end of the pole is a wooden finial which has been fabulously water gilded to the highest standard. The pole has two metal loops for hanging.

The banner is in fantastic condition and would have been kept rolled up in the church between religious occasions.

The banner measures :- 80 cm (31.5 inches) long x 67.5 cm (26.5 inches) wide at the finials.

A gorgeous and rare religious banner to add an authentic finishing touch and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe.

This is a magnificent antique French tapestry wall hanging dating from the 1800's.

It is huge - over 7 ft high x 6 ft wide and would make an impressive feature in a room.

It would have originally hung in a château and is made in silk and wool and is of superb quality.

It depicts a delightful scene of ladies and gentlemen relaxing and enjoying themselves in the grounds of a fabulous château. They sit and chat, and dance to a trio of musicians.

They are all elegantly dressed. The men wear debonair coats and breeches. They have bows in their wigs, lace at their cuffs and wear buckles on their shoes. The ladies are beautifully coiffed and wear gorgeous full skirted gowns with tight bodices.

The colours of the tapestry would always have been subtle and the passage of time has mellowed them further to a divine faded palette. Greens and neutrals dominate the scene with touches of pale pastels to the costumes.

The tapestry is in good antique condition. There are two areas of surface wear  but these blend in to the scene and do not draw the eye. There are also one or two very small holes near the top edge. These are also not obvious and blend in. The tapestry has at some stage of it's life been tacked across it's width, possibly because it was too long for the available space. The tack marks can be seen on the reverse of the tapestry but again these are barely visible on the right side.

The tapestry measures :- 230 cm (7ft 6 inches) high x 185 cm (6ft 1 inch) wide.

A fantastic antique tapestry to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.

This is a divine antique French fine linen trousseau sheet dating from the 19th Century. It is of the finest quality and is exquisitely hand embroidered and monogrammed with the initials M & B.

The lowest edge of the sheet has a ladder stitch border with a central embroidered monogram. It is also interspersed with sprigs of embroidered violets.

The monogram is large - 25 cm (9.75 inches) wide x 21 cm (8.25 inches) high.

It has the letters M & B beautifully embroidered with smooth satin stitch and entwined with violets and tendrils of leaves.

The sheet has been laundered and the linen has retained it's true antique white colour. It is in excellent condition. We have just found one tiny pin prick hole by the top seam (see pics).

The sheet measures 300 cm (9 ft 10 inches) long x 235 cm (7 ft 8.5 inches) wide.

This is a divine antique French quilt made from toile de Jouy and dating about 1800. It would add an authentic château chic touch to a period French interior.

The toile was designed by Jean- Baptiste Huet (1745–1811) and made by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf (11 June 1738 – 6 October 1815), famous for founding the royal manufacture of printed cottons of Jouy-en-Josas where the toile de Jouy was manufactured.

The toile is printed in a pinky / red colour. The background design is of a matrix of tiny hearts. Over this is printed a feast of neoclassical designs in gorgeous sepia colours. The designs incorporate every delightful image there is to be found on a toile of this period. Here we have a myriad of frollicking cherubs, laurel leaf garlands, bows and ribbon tails, birds, statuary and so it goes on.

The quilt is fabulously hand worked and plumptiously fleece filled. It is heavy and handles beautifully. The lining is of a classic saffron yellow cotton.

The quilt and it's fabric are in exceptional condition for it's 215 years or so. It has been newly laundered and has no obvious marks to the toile. There is a little wear to the top and right hand edges and there are two darns, one half way along the top edge and one in the bottom right hand corner. This, in our opinion does not detract from the useability and beauty of  this fantastic antique quilt.

It measures 148 cm (58.25 inches) wide x 181 cm (71.25 inches) long.

A fabulous quilt to use and enjoy or to treasure as part of an antique textile collection. Another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!

This is a fabulous long panel of antique French Indienne cotton with a classic 'Tree Of Life' design and dates from about 1850. The fabric is of medium weight and is strong enough for upholstery projects.

The Indian influence on the design can be seen from the 'Tree Of Life' symbols which run the length of the fabic. Within these and between them are flowers in abundance. The flowers are many and varied and are predominantly in shades of pink highlighted with mauves and yellows. Their interlinking foliage is a sublime shade of bluey grey. This strong pastel combination contrast beautifully with the warm cream background.

The fabric is in good antique condition. There is one darned area 19 cm (7.5 inches) up from the bottom edge, which is hemmed, and there is a sewn tear which ingresses down 12 cm (4.75 inches) from the top edge. The fabric looks generally crisp and clean. The pattern repeat is 47 cm (18.5 inches).

This is a sublime pair of antique French cretonne curtains dating from the early 1900's.

Their base colour is a warm cream upon which is a gorgeous floral print of garlands of roses and leaves entwined with musical instruments.

The flowers are in heavenly shades of coral and apricot and are set off perfectly against the sage green leaves. Touches of a very soft duck egg blue in the musical instruments and leaves complete the colour palette.

The curtains are unlined but the textile has the weight to hang and drape beautifully.

The top of the curtains are worked into goblet pleats beneath which is a fabulous passementerie rope knotted to correspond with the base of each pleat.

The meeting edges and the bottoms of the curtains are trimmed with a fringed passementerie. This has faded (as has the fabric) on the meeting edges of the curtains but this does not detract and adds character to these lovely curtains. The passementerie on the bottom of the curtains (particularly the right hand one) has frayed over the years. This would not be missed if the curtains were to be re-hemmed.

The curtains have not been laundered but are clean and ready for use with one or two very minor marks.

The curtains can be hung with clips or by using hooks on the back.

Each curtain measures :-

230 cm (7 ft 6.5 inches) long

120 cm (3 ft 11 inches) along the bottom

70 cm (2 ft 3.5 inches) along the top

A divine pair of antique French curtains exuding authentic faded château chic charm.

It would have been used by a lady to store gloves, handkerchiefs or stockings and would be a pretty and useful addition to any boudoir.

The box is covered in a fine cotton fabric with a divine cabbage roses print in gorgeous shades of pink set against a background of lush green leaves. The fabric on the back and bottom of the box is as it would have been originally, but that on the sides and lid has deliciously faded over the years to perfection.

The lid and sides of the box are padded giving it a pleasingly plumptious look.

The lid is trimmed with a gorgeous rope passementerie which has also faded. The lid lifts up to reveal an interior lined with a soft cotton fabric in a co-ordinating shade of burgundy.

This is a piece of rare antique French mattress ticking dating from the 1800's. It is of the highest quality and is in a fabulous striped colour combination.

The ticking would have originally been used to make a mattress cover which would have been stuffed with feathers to make the mattress. This piece has still got a soft down of feathers on the reverse side.

The textile is a tight weave of predominantly cotton but I think there must be an elemant of silk as it is very tactile and has a slight sheen. The tight weave is very strong and the ticking would be perfect for upholstery projects.

It is the sublime colour combination of this old and rare piece of period textile that sets it apart from others. The colours, although vibrant have a subtlety that only comes with age. The base colour is a fabulous shade of red. The stripes are a positive rainbow and from edge to middle are navy, turquoise, olive green, sage green, red, terracotta, brick, ochre, red, navy, pale pink, cerise, dark pink and terracotta.

There are one or two tiny areas of wear and one small hole at one of the edges. There are some marks as one would expect. These are water marks and should come out with a launder.
