B1348 - Sumptuous Pair Antique French Textured Velvet Chateau Curtains / Drapes, 19th C
This is a sumptuous pair of long antique French château curtains dating from the 19th Century. They are made in a superb quality heavy textured velvet (each curtain weighs over 2.6 kg). They would add an authentic château chic touch of faded grandeur to a room and certainly help to keep the draughts out.
The textile is a deep pile figured velvet of wonderful quality. Each curtain has a border to either side with scrolled leaves and flowers. The central panel is a matrix of cinched swags. The velvet is a rich reddish brown in colour and has faded in places to a rich chocolate brown to wonderful effect.
On turning the curtains around we see that they have a very deep hem. They are lined and sewn with wooden curtain rings. The curtain rings are positioned such that the top of the curtains will hide the pole.
The velvet textile is in good antique condition. Of course there is fading & darkening in places from the last 100 years, but there is no wear or obvious marks and the curtains are wholesome. The lining has perished along the meeting edge of one of the curtains but this does not affect the look or hanging of the curtains.
We have left the curtains as we found them. In our opinion they are ready to hang in a period home where any characteristics of their age will be celebrated. They have not been dry cleaned.
Each curtain measures:- 255 cm (8 ft 4.5 inches) long x 70 cm (2 feet 3.5 inches) wide across the top & 125 cm (4ft 1.25 inches) across the bottom.
This is a fabulous pair of antique French curtains to add an authentic château chic statement and another divine period French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
N.B. Any curtain accessories we have used to display the curtains are not included unless otherwise stated.
