B1951 - Truly Spectacular Long Antique French Tapestry Chateau Curtain / Drape, Circa 1860

This is a truly spectacular antique French tapestry château curtain dating from the Napoleon III era C 1860. The good news is that we also have another one of these, B1950, listed in our other items to make up the pair.

The curtain has a dark champagne background. The design is in shades of brown and aubergine and has everything one could hope for on a château curtain.

The curtain has a scrolled crest with swagged flower garlands. To either side of  this is a balustrade with a three dimensional appearance.

There is a scrolled border to both sides which finishes at the bottom with a stunning flourish.

Within the border to the centre of the curtain there are urns of flowers, scrolls, birds. griffins, butterflies, shells and flaming torches - just breathtaking!

The curtain is finished all round. There is a modern curtain tape.

The curtain is of good weight (nearly 4 kg)  and is in good antique condition, but not surprisingly, considering it's age it does have some charcteristics. There is a small area of wear about the size of a Euro next to one of the griffins, There is a line of wear about 15 cm (6 inches) coming in from the right hand edge and some wear and fading along the bottom edge. There is a large darker area across the centre of the curtain. The curtain has not been dry cleaned. Non of these characteristics affect the overall splendour of this fabulous old textile. In our opinion it is ready for use in a period home where the characteristics it has acquired over the last 150 + years will be celebrated.

The curtain measures :-  337 cm (11 ft 0.75 inches) long x 130 cm (4 ft 3.2 inches) wide.
